Recap, Highlights & Analysis: Real Madrid Femenino 7-0 FC Twente; UEFA Women’s Champions League

Real Madrid won 7-0 against FC Twente in what was a one-sided affair after half-time. Twente caused some problems with their high press early on in the game and forced mistakes but never capitalized.

Below are my immediate thoughts and analysis, along with some highlights. A post-match podcast will follow.

  • Alberto Toril started with a strong lineup with the duo of María Méndez and Maëlle Lakrar both starting at CB and the attack being led by a quartet of Naomie Feller, Caroline Weir, Linda Caicedo and Signe Bruun. The attack allowed for both a direct threat alongside chance creation from open-play, however Madrid were forced to use the former more often.
  • Madrid took an early lead inside the first four minutes via Bruun, who latched on a loose shot/intended pass from Caroline Weir. The lead was doubled of María Méndez in the 16th minute from a corner situation.
  • Twente’s press posed a lot of questions for Madrid, who were adamant in building from the back despite failures. The Dutch side forced a fair bit of turnovers high up the pitch but couldn’t put any on target. In fact, they outshot Las Blancas in the first half 5-6. Their player-to-player marking scheme and aggressive positioning in attack forced Madrid to go long eventually and find Bruun as the target player.
  • The second half was completely different to the first. Las Blancas ran over the Dutch side and scored five goals, four of which came from set-play and one came in transition. Toril’s side scored twice inside the first 10 minutes of the second half, one of which was an absolute thunderbolt from our Scottish wizard, Weir.
  • María Méndez scored a brace while Oihane scored a goal and joined the goalscoring party from defence. The game also marked the return to the pitch for Sandie Toletti, who last featured in a game on October 4th. The French midfielder’s return boosts the squad’s depth and adds a dynamic element in the middle of the park.
  • Carla Camacho scored her second goal in the UWCL after scoring against Vllaznia in 2022-23 season. The youngster capped off a dominant scoreline with a goal right at the death to make it seven.
