Two reasons why this could be Rodrygo’s best season at Real Madrid

The departure of a legend like Toni Kroos, still at the peak of his powers, was undeniably a major loss for Real Madrid. However, in the wake of his exit, an unexpected opportunity has emerged—particularly for Rodrygo. With the tactical shift allowing Carlo Ancelotti to accommodate all four attacking stars—Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, and Rodrygo—there is now a clearer role for the Brazilian.

Historically inconsistent in front of goal, Rodrygo now finds himself in the background of Real Madrid’s attacking hierarchy, but that’s far from a bad thing. With Mbappe, one of the world’s best finishers, in the squad, and Vinicius continuing his blistering form as one of the club’s top scorers since 2021, the pressure on Rodrygo to be the primary attacking force has diminished. This has allowed him to refine his contributions in other areas, particularly defensively, which leads to the second key reason why this season could be his best.

Seven games in, Rodrygo has shown remarkable defensive commitment, which has been one of the standouts of Madrid’s season so far.

There’s a misconception that Vinicius does not defend, but the reality is that he’s no longer asked to. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Vinicius still leads Rodrygo in tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per 90 minutes.

But the gradual shift of defensive duties to Rodrygo is apparent in both the numbers and the eye test. With Mbappe not expected to track back, and Vinicius asked to focus more on attack, Rodrygo’s defensive presence has been vital. His willingness to shoulder these duties adds a new dimension to his game and has proven crucial during Madrid’s start to the season.

Rodrygo’s reduced offensive burden and increased defensive contribution have been key factors in his standout performances. With the balance between the two, this might well be the season he evolves into a more complete player at Real Madrid.
